Learning - Jatropha planation

Hi All

I am a software professional and keen to invest in Jatropha plantation and bio-fuel extraction.

I am native of coimbatore district, Tamilnadu. I would really appreciate some experienced folks help me to understand the opportunities and how I can get started on this.

If I happen to be Balamurugan, I will first search for a commercial plantation of Jatropha in and around Coiambatore.

Then, I will look for some oil say Jatropha in the market physically.

In the absence of two, better look for Biodiesel in your area and find out what the cost is?

Its better to listen instead of saying something.
I doubt!
Jatropha is ever proved to be fit commercially at the moment in India.

Thanks, Bhadrinath. Jatropha is one plant that I know is used for bio-fuel. I will be happy to learn about other plants as well.

I would like to learn from the experienced folks.

The basic problem in Jatropha is one has to wait for some years.
The worst problem is manual harvesting.

There are people in this country who make money in the name of
Plantation or planting material but never try to focus the
importance of real issues in this subject say the cost on plantation
the actual yield of Jatropha as on date.


There are many short term fuel crops.
Perhaps! I do not want to misguide a new guy like you
and stand very firm!
Jatropha project is good for seasoned boomers.

Do u agree my opinion that the jatropha crop needs 24 hour ICU condition ,otherwise u may not get yield (u can visit my call on jatropha mistakes)

Hence no need/quetion of harvesting the crop manualy or by machine,ok
I hope now u too will agree the 24 hour icu condition.

Excerpt from Physic nut Jatropha curcas L., International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) monograph by Joachim Heller (page 35)

10 Ecology

"It grows on well-drained soils with good aeration and is well adapted to marginal soils with low nutrient content.. On Cape Verde, the physic nut is found especially in the stony "rebeiras" i.e dry stream courses (Fig 10a), and on rocky slopes where it is spread by seeds. In heavy soils, root formation is reduced. Physic nut is a highly adaptable species, but its strength as a crop comes from its ability to grow on poor, dry sites."

Jatropha curcas L. is not a plant that needs an ICU but a plant that has adapted to a life of hardships with low nutrients and moisture.
