Default D1 Mohan to take up jatropha cultivation in a big way

Business Standard, Jul 12, 2007

D1 Mohan Bio Oils Limited (DMBOL), a joint venture company of Mohan Breweries and Distilleries Limited and D1 Oils Plc of the UK, is embarking on large-scale cultivation of jatropha in south India with a production target of 2.5 lakh tonnes of biodiesel in the next five years.

Sarju Singh, director (operations), DMBOL, said the company would bring more than 2.5 lakh hectares under jatropha cultivation by entering into contractual agreements with the farmers.

D1 Mohan has planted jatropha in over 8,000 hectares and plans to cover another 10,000 hectares in 20 districts of Tamil Nadu in the current fiscal in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Department and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

While the government will take care of the subsidy component, the technological inputs are to be provided by the TNAU.

In Andhra, about 4,000 hectares are under jatropha cultivation. In the current year, it plans to add another 5,000 hectares.

The company is yet to enter into Karnataka, while in Kerala, the agro-climatic conditions are not deemed suitable for the cultivation.

D1 Mohan has already commissioned a manufacturing facility at Coimbatore envisaging 7 tonnes of biodiesel per day. A blueprint is being readied for locating the manufacturing units in close proximity to farming communities. About 20 centres will be selected under the sustainable oil supply programme.

Default promises only empty ? success only Crude oil will shoot up to $100?

I am consultant Agricultural Engineer, am also not able to hear success stories in around Tamilnadu. And even told about failure stories from Rajastan etc.

I had a chance to go through a CII meet minutes of the meeting whcih held some one and half years before.

After all promises and everything, in the foot note, they have told, there is no record on success story and commercial viability of the project anywhere in the world.

Though it is promosing, bottlenecks have to be cleared or Crude Oil prices has to shoot upto 100dollar / barrel.

Any success stories, I would like to visit.

It is unfortunate that inadequate attention is being given for promotion of plantations where there is great potential for future. Companies concerned should note that negative experiences of farming community would spread more rapidly like wildfire than successful stories.

Large number of companies are putting their predominant emphasis on biofuel processing today rather than simultaneously developing feedstocks sustainably for tomorrow. Improving the quality of germplasm should get top priority. Unless productive germplasm is given to ensure good returns, it would be difficult to attract the farmers to raise plantations even if initial subsidies are ensured.

Formal understanding should be entered into with farmers taking them into full confidence of what support is possible and what is not and meet the obligations assiduously leaving no room for the farmers to get dissatisfied.

Default Independent agency to montior >...?

Dear Dr.Sreedhar

Not only adequate attention, there needs to be critical analysis of claims and counter claims by independent agency is required. As sometimes, the claims are proved to be either false or tall calims......

As nowadays, there is vested interest which invariable exists in all including me.

Is it possible to have independent agency.... without vested interest to monitor such kind of claims and counter claims....?

Dear Shri Gomathinayagam,

I agree with you that there is a need for an independent and objective monitoring agency. It would of course requires support as it is service oriented. My view is that the industry itself can do it in its own interest under a body supported by all players put together; not by any one individual company. (Please see one of my letters in which I suggested formation of a Science Foundation which can take up several functions of common interest. Many in the industry may not readily agree for this in the context of sharing the Intellectual property developed). It will have the flexibility to get the funding from external agencies also as it would be non-profit making research institution.

Daer Mr.Bakthavasalam,

May I know your address. I can arrange immediately to pickup Jatropha seeds. With reference to NOVOD Board subsidy for Jatropha cultivation, we were informed that the subsidy scheme was kept in abeyance presently.

Dear friend!
The price of the feedstocks for Biodiesel is nothing short of crude!!!!

The only development is the marginal fall of price in Methanol.
Thanks to the importers.

Nothing to believe these MNCs who are making huge money after having projected the Indian Map in London stock exchanges.
May be Gomathis and Vinayakam know better than me.

Jatropha is a dream!
D.1 is its destiny.
