    Namaste,

Is it possible to cultivate Olives in India especially Maharashtra?
I see that grapes, oranges and olives are cultivated in California and
grapes and oranges in Maharashtra. So I guess olives can
    find a home here too!

What is the proper way of bringing into the country cultivars
for Olives? Can some grape growers coop or agricultural university
investigate the case for olive cultivation please?

News from Daily Times, Pakistan. Dated 12-07-2002

ISLAMABAD: The government has finalised a plan to enhance olive
plants cultivation in the country and farmers will be given incentives
to encourage them to promote olive cultivation under this plan. According
to official sources, conducive climatic conditions will be created for
the cultivation of this valuable crop in various parts of the country. The
farmers have been advised to assist government endeavour for the
promotion of this crop, which will bring visible change in the living
standard of the growing community. The country spends valuable amount
of foreign exchange on the import of edible oil, which can be saved by
promoting the cultivation of this crop. In order to popularise the crop
in the potential areas, nurseries have been set up in various
localities countrywide to grow the saplings of olive plant.

    Thank you Mr Yuval chen,

    Why Olives?

The main reason for selecting olives is to provide diversified avenues
for the grape and orange cultivators of Maharashtra.
I think that olives will be used in the Indian kitchen similar
to the black olives on pizza toppings. I do not expect olive
oil to replace other edible oils in India. Neither do I expect
export potential for olives from India.

The scale of operation I am thinking of is small to
medium, farm of 50 to 1000 trees, and investment of
    US$1000 to US$10000 excluding land.
These are initial rough estimates. Large scale operation
involving the Governments of India or Maharashtra
will have to be lobbied for.

Assuming that suitable cultivars for olives have to be
imported, regulatory approval will be needed. How
    does one get this?

I feel that olives specialized for direct consumption (black
olives for pizza toppings) would be the better choice and
not the ones for oil extraction. More over, the strains
should be suited for the Indian climate, soil, and labour.
We may not want olive trees that are suitable for automated
    harvesting.

    Dear Mr K Vinod Kumar

It is better for olive project to be of bigger size, in order to justefy the industrial phase.
If you have small lots then table olive green or black should be cultivated.

All olive varieties can cultivate as black or green olives, also the black color is recieved in a chemical process.

The big advantage of oil varieties that it is a comodity, and could be sold in high prices in any world market.
