Stevia Cultivation
Description:
Stevia

Latin name : STEVIA REBAUDIANA
Family : Chrysanthemum
Common Name : Stevia
Parts Used : Leaves

Introduction :
Stevia leaves have functional and sensory properties superior to those of many other high potency sweeteners. Stevia is likely to become a major source of high potency sweetener for the growing natural food market in the future. Although Stevia can be helpful to anyone, there are certain groups who are more likely to benefit from its remarkable sweetening potential. These include diabetics, those interested in decreasing caloric intake, and children.

Plant Description :
Stevia rebaudiana is a small perennial growing up to 65-80 cm tall, with sessile, oppositely arranged leaves. Different species of Stevia contain several potential sweetening compounds, with Stevia rebaudiana being the sweetest of all. Stevia is a semi-humid subtropical plant that can be grown easily like any other vegetable crop even in the kitchen garden. The soil should be in the pH range of 6.5- 7.5; well-drained red soil and sandy loam soil. Saline soils should be avoided to cultivate this plant.

Distribution :
Stevia is been successfully cultivated in the recent years at many areas of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerela, Tamil Nadu and Orissa. The increasing demands for natural sweeteners have driven the farmers in India for Stevia cultivation in large scale.

Chemical composition :
Diterpene Glycoside is the group of natural sweeteners that have been extracted from Stevia. The leaves of wild Stevia plants contain 0.3 % dulcoside, 0.6% rebaudioside C, 3.8 % rebaudioside A and 9.1 % stevioside.

Uses of Stevia :
Stevia is safe for diabetics, as it does, not affect blood sugar levels.
Stevia does not have the neurological or renal side effects of some of the artificial sweeteners.
Stevia possess anti-fungal and anti-bacterial property also in addition to its other versatile uses. It can be safely used in herbal medicines, tonics for diabetic patients and also in the daily usage products like mouthwashes, and tooth pastes.
Mild Stevia leaf tea offers excellent relief for an upset stomach
Brief Investment Strategy:

100 KGS OF STEVIA EXTRACT CAN BE PROCESSED INTO 8-12 KGS OF FINAL PRODUCT ( WHITE SUGAR)
WHICH IS 8-12%, THE FINAL PRODUCT IS CALLED "STEVIOCIDES".

Cost per acre

( expenses such as land, irrigation, plants, plantation cost, natural manure, labour cost, bore well cost, processing machine cost & Misce cost)

Rs.2.10 lacs per acre (one time cost)

Rs.0.50 lac per acre/year (recurring cost per year)

Yield from Each Acre: 3600 kg / year / acre

Total Produce per acre per year in Rupees: 3600 x 70 = Rs.2.52 lacs

For First year,
Profit per 1 acres per year in Rupees: Rs.2.52 lacs –2.10 lac = 0.42 lacs
From Second Year onwards,
Profit per 1 acres per year in Rupees: Rs.2.52 lacs – 0. 50 lac = 2.02 lacs

Minimum Investment Required: 5 acres & above

Cost per acre

( expenses such as land, irrigation, plants, plantation cost, natural manure, labour cost, bore well cost, processing machine cost & Misce cost)

Rs.3.45 lac per acre (one time cost)

Rs.1 lac per acre/year (recurring cost per year)

Yield from Each Acre: 4000 kg / year / acre

Total Produce per acre per year in Rupees: 4000 x 90 = Rs.3.6 lacs

Hence Profit per 1 acres per year in Rupees: Rs.3.6 lacs - 1 lac = 2.6 lacs

Minimum Investment Required: 5 acres & above

Rs.2.00 lac per acre (one time cost)

Rs.0.75 lac per acre/year (recurring cost per year)

Yield from Each Acre: 3600 kg / year / acre

Total Produce per acre per year in Rupees: 3600 x 80 = Rs.2.88 lacs

Hence Profit per 1 acres per year in Rupees: Rs.2.88 lacs – 0.75 lac = 1.13 lacs

hi
this is an honest farmers reply.
I tried capsicum last year. I was told 4Kg per plant production and 12000 plants per acre. Now do your maths I ended up with less than half 9 tons only to be exact from my half acre. Also the timing is vital . You must sow in june and plant in july to finish production lates by january so that the rates dont fall. After transport and commission the best rates I got were 75 iin hand. Average of season is unlikely to go above 50 .
Its profitable to do in shade net and that is all it requires. I would think twice before bringing 35 lakhs worth of green house into capsicum production:confused:

What are the benefits of growing in green house. Is it really necessary. Capsicum is a hot weather plant and grows better in sun, rather then in a green house.

Can someone please clarify...

dear seemantinipathare,
Thank you very much for your really honest reply.
Please clarify the point that i am not understood ..
1) do you have cultivated in Open field ?
2) 9tons of half acre means you can get 18tons per acre Right?
2)Do you sow in June, at right time?
3)You have got rs.75000 of half acre ????
4) what the price you got per KG after all expenses ?
5)What You cultivated Shimla mirch OR Yellow/Red Capsicum ?

Please post your reply as I am eagerly waiting.

dear seemantinipathare ,Thanks In Advance

I planted coloured capsicum from syngenta.......last year I had planted them late, i.e in sept . Mine are in Polyhouse because my Poly house was vacant and this was an interim crop until the right time for my next flower crop. The best rate in entire season was Rs 75/kg in hand. The worst was less than 20 / kg. I had planted only 6000 plants in half acre. I should have got 24 tons production as per standard advice. I got 9 tons of colour and I sold off the last 1 ton as green capsicum locally for rs 20/kg. The seed costs about rs 1 per seed. the support system about 25000/acre. Add to this the fertiliser and labour cost. its an easy quick crop to do but I suggest in shade net. Shade net prevents freezing winter cold and also screaming october heat. It also provides struture necessary to tie your support strings.
hope that answers all your querries
regards

Have you thought of Hydroponics for Capsicum?

What Hydroponics can give you.
Average plantation of 16000 plants per acre
Average 96 tons per acre and can go up to 160 tons if you use quality seeds and nutrients.
Consider Average price of Rs. 40 per kg which should give you 38.4 to 64 lakh in revenue
Soil less system will ensure no loss of plants due to soil born diseases.
Production time frame of nearly 12 months.
Clean growing conditions will ensure less exposure to air born diseases and better control if infection does take place.
Most important factor is re plantation. Within 1 week you can start with new plants (6 weeks old) growing in the greenhouse, so you make the best use of your land. It is never sitting ideal.
Labor efficiency is exceptional since your labor is not involved in weed removal or watering etc.
Water and fertilizer efficiency will ensure lower costs.

If you are interested in seeing our project for color capsicum then you should visit us during Nov- December at Talegaon, near Pune. We are foremost the growers and then consultants.
