    Information Profile @ a Glance
    • Hydroponics is often defined as "the cultivation of plants without soil."
    • Hydroponics offers many advantages for commercial agriculture.
    • Cultivating plants without soil eliminates the need for vast farmland and allows crops to be produced in greenhouses or even in the desert sands.
    • Hydroponic techniques also allow for precise water and nutrient application directly to the roots of each plant.
    • Soilless gardening offers many advantages to the home gardener.
    • Since a sterile medium is used, there are no weeds to remove, and soil-borne pests and diseases are minimized, if not eliminated completely.
    • A hydroponic medium should offer no nutritive value-its sole purpose is to provide support for the plant and to allow an even distribution of the nutrient solution.

Jackfruit Production ,Technology, Applications, Patent, Consultants, Company Profiles, Reports, Market, Projects

    Information @ a Glance

The Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a species of tree of the mulberry family (Moraceae) and its fruit, native to southwestern India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and possibly also east to the Malay Peninsula. It is an evergreen tree growing to 10-15 m tall. The leaves are alternately arranged, elliptical, 5-25 cm long and 3-12 cm broad, often lobed on young trees but entire on mature trees.
A tree may yield as many as 150 large fruits annually attached to the trunk and its lateral branches. While some exotic varieties bear 250 to 500 fruits per year. The fruiting capacity of a tree depends upon the input supply, weather conditions, and protection from the insect pests and diseases which are many.
Jackfruit are wind and insect pollinated and generally require cross-pollination for satisfactory fruit production. Thus, planting more than one cultivar may be of benefit. Mature jackfruit trees may produce from 40 to over 250 pounds (18-114 kg) per tree, depending on the cultivar, weather, and cultural practices. Trees that average 150 pounds (68 kg) per tree or more are considered good producers.
Jackfruit is heavy and cumbersome to transport and should be harvested when mature only 3–5 days from ripening, so it is best to have a market close by if selling fresh fruit. For more remote areas, where the local market is small, processing the fruit into a more stable product such as dried or processed fruit may be necessary. Perennial crops such as durian, coffee, and citrus can be grown together with jackfruit, given wider spacing between jackfruit trees to allow sufficient space for the other crop trees.
A recommended commercial fertilizer regime is 100–150 g (3.5–5 oz) ammonium sulfate (20-0-0) per tree in the first year, increasing in pre-bearing years; then 0.5–1.0 kg (1.1–2.2 lb) of 14-14-14 fertilizer per tree increasing with age and size, with a full-grown tree 15–20 years old receiving 2–3 kg (4.4–6.6 lb) complete fertilizer . The use of nutrient-rich organic mulches such as prunings from fast-growing nitrogen-fixing trees can reduce or eliminate the use of industrial fertilizer.
The unripe fruit is astringent in action and on ripening it becomes somewhat laxative. In China, jackfruit pulp and seeds are considered as tonic, cool and nutritious. The seed stretch relieves biliousness and the fruit is aphrodisiacal. The residue of the leaf if mixed with coconut oil heals ulcers. Mixed with vinegar, the milky juice promotes healing of abscesses, snake bites and glandular swellings.
Jackfruit was sold year round in large metropolitan markets. However, market development was being restricted by availability of supply, the fresh-eating segment in particular often being poorly supplied with inconsistent quality fruit. Most markets considered the crunchy cultivars with pink-orange flesh the best quality, with only an ethnic Indian market segment willing to buy soft-fleshed fruit if the price was very low.
Agriculture is the single largest source of livelihood of the majority of the rural masses and is also the mainstay of the economy of Meghalaya.A variety of Horticultural Plantation Crops are produced in Tripura like Pineapple, Oranges, Cashewnut, Jackfruit, Coconut, Tea, Rubber, Forest, Plantations etc. The North Eastern region has been identified as an area having very good scope for the development of food processing industries.
Export of fresh jackfruit is relatively low. In 1997, export valued is about RM 3.82 million, and increased to RM5.04 million in year 2000 and RM 4.45 million in year 2001.

    Jatropha cultivation detail in CD
    Project @ a Glance
    • Jatropha curcus is a drought-resistant perennial, growing well in marginal/poor soil. It is easy to establish, grows relatively quickly and lives, producing seeds for 50 years.
    • It is found to be growing in many parts of the country, rugged in nature and can survive with minimum inputs and easy to propagate.
    • This highly drought-resistant species is adapted to arid and semi-arid conditions. The current distribution shows that introduction has been
most successful in the drier regions of the tropics with annual rainfall of 300-1000 mm.
    • It occurs mainly at lower altitudes (0-500 m) in areas with average an-nual temperatures well above 20°C but can grow at higher altitudes and tolerates slight frost. It grows on well-drained soils with good aeration and is well adapted to marginal soils with low nutrient content.
    • It is a small tree or shrub with smooth gray bark, which exudes a whitish colored, watery, latex when cut. Normally, it grows between three and five meters in height, but can attain a height of up to eight or ten meters under favourable conditions.
    • It has large green to pale-green leaves, alternate to sub-opposite, three-to five-lobed with a spiral phyllotaxis.
    • The petiole length ranges between 6-23 mm. The inflorescence is formed in the leaf axil. Flowers are formed terminally, individually, with
female flowers usually slightly larger and occurs in the hot seasons.
    • Jatropha makes a delightful red-flowered accent in a shrub border planted to attract attention to an area. It flowers nearly year round and so is quite popular as
a patio tree or garden accent.
    • The trees are deciduous, shedding the leaves in the dry season. Flowering occurs during the wet season and two flowering peaks are often seen. In permanently humid regions, flowering occurs throughout the year. The seeds mature about three months after flowering.
    • Jatropha seedcakes, produced as a by-product of pressing the oil, make an excellent organic fertilizer or protein-rich livestock feed. Another by-product is glycerine.
    • Other parts of the plant are also useful: dark blue dye and wax can be produced from the bark, the stem can be used as a poor quality wood, and the roots help in making yellow dye.
    • The flowers of Jatropha Curcas and the Jatropha stem have well-known medicinal properties, and the leaves can be used for dressing wounds. All these things can be used, or sold.
    • Alternate uses of the oil include climatic protection, varnishes, illuminants, soap, organic insecticide, and medicine for skin diseases, cancer, piles, snakebite, paralysis, dropsy and many more.
    • The latex of Jatropha curcas contains an alkaloid known as "jatrophine" which is believed to have anti-cancer properties. It has also wound-healing properties of curcain.
    • Jatropha the wonder plant produces seeds with an oil content of 37%. The oil can be combusted as fuel without being refined. It burns with clear smoke-free flame, tested successfully as fuel for simple diesel engine. The by-products are press cake a good organic fertilizer, oil
    contains also insecticide.
    • Kalam said: 'With limited research so far in the bio-diesel sector in the country, India aims to produce 6 million tonnes (MT) annually of bio-diesel by 2010 and 60 MT by 2030.' He said the government and private sector majors should accelerate research in bio-fuel sector as well as the related aspects of production, marketing and processing.

    Mushroom, Cultivation, Processing & Markets

    Information Profile @ a Glance
Mushrooms are fruiting bodies of some members of a lower group of plants, known as fungi
The exotic flavour and taste and fleshiness of mushroom have made it an important delicacy in human diet.
Nutritionally, it is rich in proteins, vitamins (B, C and D) and minerals. Cholesterol and sodium content of mushroom is low. It is also known
to have medicinal values and certain varieties of mushrooms can inhibit growth of cancerous tumor
Of the various types of mushrooms presently cultivated in the world, eight are important. These are : button, oyster, straw, shikate, woody ear, winter, silver ear and nameko. These account for 99 per cent of the total world production of mushrooms.
In India only three types, namely, button, oyster and straw mushrooms are commercially cultivated.
    Government Support is available
The lack of marketing avenues for mushrooms is a cause for the lack of interest among farmers in taking up cultivation.
The major importers of canned button mushroom are Germany, USA, France, Belgium Sweden, Norway and UK
The major exporters are Holland, China, France, Spain, Hongkong, Taiwan, Indonesia and South Korea
Though India’s present share in world production and trade of button mushroom is meager, its future potential is rated as high
The size of the units that are being set up in India have production capacities ranging from 250 to 3500 tonnes of fresh button mushrooms per year.
There are number of Institutions providing consultancy services and Training Opportunities

Orange Cultivation, History, Uses, Health, Extract, Reports, Market
    Project Profile @ a Glance
Oranges are oval to sphere-shaped fruits with leathery, porous skin. Their color ranges from orange to red-orange. Oranges may be confused with other citrus fruits, such as grapefruits and tangerines.
Oranges grow on evergreen trees that reach a mature size of 30 feet high and 20 feet wide. The branches of many orange trees are thorny.
There are different types of oranges: navel oranges, Valencia oranges and blood oranges are the most cultivated races.
Orange flowers are white in color and very fragrant. The flower blooms in the spring, but the fruit is not ready until the following fall or winter.
The orange blossom is the state flower of Florida.
The navel orange is a seedless orange, with medium-thick rind, in which a second small, or abortive, orange grows.
A variety of the Washington navel orange is the principal orange product of Texas.
The sour orange is cultivated to a limited extent for marmalade and to provide rootstock for less vigorous strains.
About 20 percent of the total crop of oranges is sold as whole fruit; the remainder is used in preparing frozen and canned orange juice, extracts, and preserves.
Brazil’s production of oranges during 2005/06 is forecast at 18.2 million tons, up 10 percent over last year’s level, assuming that good weather conditions prevail during 2006 to support fruit setting and size.
U.S. orange production during 2005/06 is estimated at 8.4 million tons, up only 1 percent from the previous year.
Florida’s orange crop is forecast up nearly 6 percent from the previous year. Offsetting this is an 11-percent decline in California’s orange production for 2005/06.
The orange is a favorite fruit among Americans. It has consistently ranked as the third most consumed fresh fruit behind bananas and apples. As a juice, it ranks number one. On average, Americans consume 2½ times more orange juice annually than its nearest competitor, apple juice.
The United States is the world's second-largest orange producer after Brazil. Together, the two countries account for over half of world production.
Two large processors/exporters of orange juice concentrate in Costa Rica, TicoFrut and Del Oro.
TicoFruit’s processing plant is located in Muelle, San Carlos in the province of Alajuela, about 3 hours from San Jose.
Brazil is the leading orange-producing country in the world, followed by the United
States, Mexico, Spain, Italy, China, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco and Greece. Florida and California are the leading orange-producing states in the U.S. These two states produce nearly 25 billion pounds of oranges each year

Emu Farming, Processing, Products, Standards, Setting Up Farm, Meat Processors and EMU Farms

    Project at a Glance

The Ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a flightless bird native to Africa. It is the only living species of its family, Struthionidae, and its genus, Struthio.
They are distinct in their appearance, with a long neck and legs and the ability to run at speeds of about 65 km/h (40 mph).
Ostriches can be fed with a wide range of prime material, like luzernes (fresh, hay or pallets), corn, wheat, soja, vegetables, grass, beans, sub products of the production of beer, sunflowers, olive oil, sugar, rice...
Ostriches and emus are both members of a family of flightless birds. Other members of this family include the cassowaries (Casuariinae) of New Guinea, emus (Dromiceinae) of Australia, kiwis (Apterygidae) of New Zealand, rheas (Rheidae) of South America and tinamous (Tinamidae) of the Neotropics, ranging from north-eastern Mexico to Tierra del Fuego. The extinct groups include moas (Dinornithidae) of New Zealand, elephant birds (Aepyornithidae) of Africa and Madagascar and mihirung birds (Dromornithidae) of Australia. Except for the tinamou, these birds are entirely flightless and are known collectively as ratites
Ostrich farming is probably more moneymaking business than farming cattle.
Ostriches are very fertile. They can produce more than 40 young animals per year. Bird’s gestation period is about 42 days. Ostriches can be bred for over 30 years.
The principal products of the current world ostrich industry are leather and meat. Other products include oil, feathers and eggs.
The ostrich feathers are very beautiful. That is why they are desired from many of us.
The ostrich’s leather is even more desirable. Only the ostrich farming produces this leather. Ostrich’s leather is soft but strong and it very famous with its distinctive quill patterns.
The greater parts of ostrich farming profits come from ostrich’s leather sales.
Ostrich farming is a really wonderful alternative to cattle farming. Ostriches are beautiful birds if you enjoy watching them. Ostrich farming is an enchanting and profitable industry.
Ostrich meat is being promoted as a low-cholesterol red meat because of its red color, beef-like texture and low fat content. Processing studies conducted at Texas A&M University show that the average carcass dressing percentage is 57.57 percent. Therefore, a 250 pound ostrich would yield about 130 pounds of meat.
Ostrich leather is a popular product for making boots, clothing and upholstery. An adult ostrich will produce 14 square feet of hide. One hide can made three pairs of boots.
The correct management of ostrich farms is not difficult to learn, but people should not enter the industry without an understanding of the minimum requirements for the welfare of ostriches and should ensure that they have access to an industry specialist before they purchase stock.
Ostrich oil has been largely overlooked by the South Africans. An Australian company has developed a range of ostrich-oil cosmetics which is slowly gaining market acceptance.
South Africa has the world’s largest industry with approximately 400 producers. Ostrich is known as the healthy red meat alternative and this is where its marketing potential lies.
In India too, EMU Farms are coming up in different parts of the country. Government/ Banks support these projects & is one of the interesting projects for Entrepreneurs

    Oyster Mushroom information in CD
    Information profile @ a Glance
    • Mushroom is an exotic source of vegetarian food. Most of its varieties are edible and form a tasty and nutritious diet
    • There is a growing market for
mushrooms because of their subtle flavour, nice aroma, special taste and food value
    • Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus species) can be grown on variety of crop refuses, saw dust, bagasse , sludge etc
    • Oyster mushroom can grow at moderate temperature ranging from 20 to 300 C and humidity 55-70% for a period of 6 to 8 months in a year. It can also be cultivated in summer months by providing the extra humidity required for its growth. In hilly areas above 900m. (m.s.l.), the best growing season is during March/April to September/October and in the lower regions from September/October to March/April.
    • Oyster mushrooms are the third largest cultivated mushroom. China, the world leader in Oyster production, contributes nearly 85% of the total world production of about a million tonnes.
    • The other countries producing oyster mushrooms include Korea, Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Thailand and Phillipines.
    • The present production of this crop in India is only around 1500 tonnes due to low domestic demand. Another inhibiting factor is that export demand orders are large and can be met only if a linkage is developed between producer, cooperatives and exporters.

Pearl Culture, Grading, Processing Technology, Guidelines and Policy info in CD

    Project at a Glance.

Pearls have been a source of fascination for centuries. They have been considered the most magical and feminine of all gems and are the only one created by a living organism. Pearls emanate a certain warmth and glow not found in other gems, due to their unique beginnings.
Pearls, one of the highly esteemed gems, are very valuable due to the high demand and prices for them. Several countries bordering the Indian and Pacific Oceans and some countries along the Eastern Atlantic Ocean have pearl oyster resources.
Many of the countries, particularly those in Asia, are very much interested in pearl oyster farming and pearl culture. Japan stands foremost in the two fields having developed technologies and innovations in the field.
India has one of the highest demand for pearls for setting in jewelry, and is particularly famous for its pearl oyster resources which yield superb pearls. The pearl oyster fisheries are located in two main areas: 1) in the Gulf of Mannar off Tuticorin coast and 2) in the Gulf of Kutch on the northwest coast of the country.
The principal causative factor in pearl formation in a pearl oyster is the presence of a nucleus. It can be of organic or inorganic origin, such as parasites adults or larvae, molluscan eggs, decaying parts of plants, sand grains, epithelium or blood cells of the same animal, etc. These tiny particles or organisms enter the oyster when the shell valves are open for feeding and respiration.
Cultured pearls are broadly classified into: nacreous layer pearls, prismatic layer pearls, and organic layer pearls. Different molluscs produce pearls of different colours. The colour of a pearl is usually similar to the colour of the shell nacre of the mollusc which produces it; this character is genetically controlled.
Pearl farming in general tends to be a long-term venture with large capital outlay before profits are realized. Spat collection is one facet of pearl farming that can provide fast profits to a farmer with limited capital outlay. In many parts of French Polynesia, people operate spat collection lines and sell the oysters directly to the pearl farmers who take care of the grafting and oyster husbandry.
The United States freshwater pearl industry is adding to the world’s natural pearl market. About 9 to 11 pounds of natural pearls are discovered for every 2,000 tons of freshwater mussel shells harvested to be used as nuclei in the cultured pearl market. The pearls are usually small, but a Tennessee fishery found a 16 mm white cultured pearl in recent years.

Rabbit Farming, Farms, Consultant, Production, Technology, Market information on CD
    Information @ a Glance
    • Rabbit are strictly herbivores and have a very unique, sensitive digestive tract. Their system is fairly similar to a horse’s digestive tract – they are sensitive to abrupt changes in diet, they cannot vomit to relieve digestive upsets, and they must have a constant source of fresh water to maintain gut hydration.
    • Most of us think of rabbits as highly intelligent, inquisitive animals that enjoy munching on vegetables and hopping about on grass.
    • Fresh or frozen, rabbit meat is sold all year round. It can be used in most of the ways in which chicken is used.
    • Angora rabbits are mainly raised for their wool, which is known for its quality. Angora rabbits are of many types. The differences are mainly in the amount of wool produced and the percentage of guard hair in the wool. Among the various types, German Angora is the best and annually yield 1000 to 1200gm of wool under ideal management practices.
    • Rabbit farming is another livestock activity with great scope as it is relatively easy, rewarding and takes little space compared to other livestock activities. Rabbit farming can also provide a very valuable additional source of income in the rural areas. Medical and cosmetic research also requires a large number of rabbits each year.
    • Rabbit farming is increasing commercially in many countries. Rabbit farming on a small scale involves small number (a few dozen or less) of animals feed on a variety of green forage, vegetable, household waste and agricultural by products. Rabbits are warms blooded mammals possessing a hairy coat of fur or quills on their body. It is from the family (Rabbit, Hares i.e. lagomorpha).
    • Rabbit farms vary considerably in size and scope, from a few rabbits for family consumption to large commercial operations. In the United States, approximately 200,000 producers market 6 to 8 million rabbits annually. Many breeds of rabbits are produced commercially in this country.
    • In our country, this industry is picking up for wool production in hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and lately in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and as a broiler industry in areas of temperate and subtropical climate in West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
    • Rabbits are widely used for Laboratory experiments. Such rabbit farming is governed by specific guidelines
    • For Rabbitry schemes with very large outlays, detailed project reports will have to be prepared. The items such as land development, construction of sheds and other civil structures, purchase of the breeding stock, equipment, feed cost up to the point of income generation are normally considered under bank loan
