Grapes production and economics

Areas of Cultivation :
Major grape-growing states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the north-western region covering Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Maharashta ranks first in terms of production accounting for more than 75% of total production and highest productivity in the country.

Varieties:
More than 20 varieties are under cultivation in India. However, only a dozen are commercially grown. They can be grouped under following 4 categories based on colour and seeds.
Coloured seeded Bangalore Blue, Gulabi (Muscat)
Coloured seedless Beauty Seedless and Sharad Seedless
White seeded Anab-e-Shahi, Dilkhush (clone of Anab-e-Shahi)
White seedless Perlette, Pusa Seedless, Thompson Seedless, and its clones Tas-A-Ganesh, Sonaka and Manik Chaman

Currently, Thompson Seedless is the ruling grape variety occupying 55% of the area with its clones. Bangalore Blue occupies approximately 15% of the total area while Anab-e-Shahi and Dilkhush (15%), Sharad Seedless (5%), Perlette (5%) and Gulabi and Bhokri together (5%).

1.1 Harvesting and Yield

In North India, plants start fruiting after two years of planting. Berries start ripening from the end of May in early varieties. However, most of the varieties are harvested after they have changed colour near the tip and have become sweet. A day prior to picking, the broken, decayed, deformed, under-sized berries are removed. The clusters are usually harvested during the early hours of the day before the temperature rises above 200 C.

Yield varies according to variety and climatic conditions etc. The average yield of Anab-e-Shahi and Bangalore blue is 40-50 tonnes/ha while that of seedless varieties is 20 tonnes/ha. Average yield of 20-25 tonnes/ha. is considered good.

Cost Economics:
Grape has three stages:
1. Increasing production stage (3-10 years):
Cost of Production: Rs. 42, 000 per acre
Yield: 93 quintal/ acre
Gross Return: Rs. 95,000 per acre
2. Constant Production Stage (11-14 years):
Cost of production: Rs. 45,000 per acre
Yield: 100 quintal/ acre
Gross Return: Rs. 1,05,000 per acre
3. Declining Production Stage ( above 15 years):
Cost of production: Rs. 44,000 per acre
Yield: 85 quintal/ acre
Gross Return: Rs. 85,000 per acre

Dear manohar,
I would like to sk following before searching Grape cultivation.
Where is your land located?
1]Grapes are the creepers & not like other perrinial Fruit plants .
2] They are very sensitive to climatic requirements & the physiological management of the crop.
3] The person involved in this crop management requires the taditional experienbceof growing or th eperson who have worked in this crop.
4] suggest me the market for whih you are trying to grow , ( For Indian Market. Middle East , EU , UK )
5] Only Thompson with different clones , Sharad Seedless ( Round & Ablong ), & Red Globe have performed well in traditional Grape growing areas of Maharashtra ( Nasik, Sangli, Pune , Solapur, Ahmedngar, Aurangabad ), Andhrapradesh & Karnataka.
6] Other rapes which are used for wine production are Cabernet sauvuigno, Zin Fundel, Pinot noir, Pinot Munier.
