Assistant Plant Scientist – Sweet Corn Breeding – Stanton, MN
Role Purpose –
The purpose of the Assistant Plant Scientist is to assist scientists in the sweet corn research program in delivering on project goals by providing technical and breeding assistance for hybrid evaluation and advancement.
Accountabilities –
• Functioning as an integral member of a team responsible for conducting hybrid and testcross trials. Tissue sampling. Disease inoculation and herbicide application. Produce quality assessment. Data collection, recording, error-checking, and analysis.
• Performing yield and recovery analysis. Developing machinery for high-throughput quantification. Coding new varieties in SPIRIT.
• Performing tasks to support IP protection and registration of hybrids.
• Supporting efforts to maintain adequacy and integrity of hybrid seed inventory. Perform seed increases for hybrid advancement.
• Maintaining inventory of exhaustible supplies.
• Performing all tasks and behaving in a manner compliant with and in support of all safety and regulatory related company policies and practices, including completing all required Company training courses and attending local safety meetings. Functioning as group Safety Officer.
• Overseeing tasks completed by third-party labor to ensure accurate results.
• Effectively communicating regularly with peers and supervisors regarding the status of projects and work activities.
Knowledge, experience & capabilities –
• 2 years related experience
• BA required
• Knowledge of plant breeding, plant biology, statistics and agriculture.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the whole plant.
• General knowledge of greenhouse and/or field practices.
• Knowledge of plant pathology.
