The only Kesar that Gujarat has known so far comes in the form of a juicy mango.But now,scientists of Anand Agriculture University (AAU) have successfully grown saffron (kesar),the aromatic spice from Kashmir,on their campus.
The university is looking to use transgenic technology to replicate the properties of kesar in other plants and has even cultivated it in a controlled environment.

Farmer grows saffron in enviormentally hostile north Gujarat region

In the first ever instance, a farmer has grown saffron in an open field in the adverse climatic conditions of the north Gujarat region.
Dinesh Patel of Jetpur Kampa, a small village in Vadali taluka of Sabarkantha district, has successfully cultivated the American Saffron, the most expensive herb. He claims to have reaped 95 percent of the crop.
