Are you starting your Dairy Farm - How to?
1. One needs to decide first on the aims and objective of the farm. Every year there should be a progressive aim for breeding ( including number of animals to be maintained) and production.
a. This point seems very simple, however this is one of the key performance indiactors to sustain your farm with good productive animals. Talk to me for more details on the breeding schedules. Note: First year of the operation to be dedicated for operational efficieny and herd optimization. I see lotsa new farmers look for profit optimization from day one, that is quiet impossible( sorry to be more affirmative here, however, in india we have lotsa parameters to consider, well if you can do it, love to hear from you)
2.Visit small and medium dairy farms that run on commercial basis and have a discussion with experienced farm owners to know the obvious challenges which are hidden under. You need not have to rely much on others experience, analyze every smallest event logically and if needed consult with local Veterinarians for more information.
b. This point is very important to understand the daily routines. Its no 9 to 5 jobs, but 3am to 7pm job. To do it love it.
3.If you plan to manage the farm on your own, look for opportunities to work for an existing farm for a minimum period of 3 months.
c. This is not very vital, but on the job training will help you to understand where your body will ache.
4. Develop interest and study feed and fodder's market in your region, its difficulties in relation to seasons.
d. Very imporatnt point. Dont always think its easy to buy, look for a steady continous solution and always think likea cow, you know, what I am trying to say, I will explain...have you seen cow eating almost 12 hours to 14 hours in a day, however you give it more regularly, it feels that it may not get its food or fodder next hours, it always trys to swallow the maximum and later chew its cud to digest. Its naturally built with 4 stomch and cows are highly in secure animals. Have a constant style of feed. Classically condition it. (love cows)
5. Manage a good team of labourers. You need to choose reliable persons preferably with some experience. You can also train them for specific jobs. ( i know its tough to understand the word reliability unless you fail. Construct a process and have chek points and make sure ther deliver reliable results, dont worry if they are not getting the reliability imbibed in them, we have no right to call them reliable.) I have seen one my labor being so unreliable, but I always made sure he gives reliable results and I check them regularly.
5. Visit the cattle market occasionally. Observe animals on sale and talk with persons engaged with purchasing of animals.
e. Very nice experince. Talk to me if you are in tamilnadu, i will take you to a cattle market. What a fabulous place. You can see economists, scientists, business persons without any graduations. Lovely, absolutely lovely.
Talk to me for more info for free consultations.
Thanks
