Dear Sanjay,
Investment in dairy farming can be of a varied magnitude depending on the scale of farming you intend to do. It also depends on the breed of tbe milch animals that you aim to procure. The most important aspect is feeding of the animals. It is advisable to rely on home grown forages and aim at a feeding practice which can improve Feed Conversion Efficiency. If you take the example of Murrah buffaloes in Punjab, they yield circa 30 ltrs milk per day. It is not only litres of milk that the processors value, but they need higher butter fat content, higher lactose.
Dairy farming is a scientific concept similar to any other production where the cow or buffalo is the machine that will give you milk. Theoritacally there are 300 lactation days in a year but in India due to poor feeding systems, the lactation period comes down to 150 to 200 days in many cases. This is where European, Australian, New Zealander, American farmers are ahead of us. They value the importance of animal health and resort to better feeding practices. They are more into the usage of natural ingredients than chemicals.

All the best with your new venture!!
