Dear Sir
A major portion of Isabgol crop, cultivated in India, is exported to developed countries because of their growing interest in the benefits of such products which are converted to patented products by adequate value addition by MNCs. India ranks first in Isabgol production and the sole supplier of seeds and husk in the international market, it is learnt.
Isabgol contains a significant amount of proteins and husk yields colloidal mucilage, which are valued for medicinal application. The sources in CDC informed that Isabgol is an annual herb and is cultivated in Rajasthan, Gujarat and in nurseries of Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Maximum cultivation of crop is in Rajasthan (more than 1 lakh hectare) whereas more than 95% of the units are in Unjha-Sidhpur region of North Gujarat because more than 80% Isabgol seed trading is carried through Unjha market (APMC market) which is also the largest trading centre for Isabgol seed in the world. The average annual trading of Isabgol seed in Unjha market over the last six years is around 60,000 MT.
